I have a better way of compiling and testing an X.Org driver from git:
Fedora 7 specific:
yum install git libpciaccess-devel xorg-x11-server-sdk
git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/avivo/xf86-video-avivo
You don’t need to be root, only to have acces to “/opt/avivo”, or whatever prefix you choose.
This is the tricky part: you need to add this to your “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”.
BTW, thanks to Daniel Stone I submited support for my Mobility Radeon X1300 (there seem to be many) and it’s already on git.
The tip that helped me the most is how to get my pci id: lspci -n (look for the one that starts with 1002).
It’s slower than VESA, but it works for me.
